On your first day of class at Gasburner Academy, you will need to bring a valid driver's license and any other required documentation we specify during the enrollment process.

A Commercial Driver License (CDL) is mandatory for any individual operating sizable commercial motor vehicles. Possessing a CDL serves as evidence that you have undergone training and examinations, verifying your eligibility to drive these types of vehicles.

Candidates have the opportunity to meet the criteria for three fundamental categories of Commercial Driver License (CDL):

Class A
A Class A CDL permits the holder to operate vehicles with a weight in excess of 26,001 pounds and/or with an excess of 10,000 pounds towed.

Class B
A Class B CDL permits the holder to operate vehicles with a weight in excess of 26,001 pounds, with less than 10,000 pounds towed. A Class B also allows the holder to transport 24 passengers or more, driver included.

Class C
A Class C CDL permits the holder to operate vehicles that do not fall under Class A or B designations, such as transport vehicles carrying 16 to 23 passengers, including the driver. Class C CDL holders may also transport hazardous materials.

To obtain a CDL in Texas, all applicants must possess a valid Texas driver's license. Upon CDL application, it is mandatory to acquire and retain a Commercial Driver License Permit for a minimum of 14 days. Prior to visiting the local office, applicants must complete the CDL application. Applicants need to be capable of verifying their identity and furnish a Social Security Number. The application fee will be paid by Gasburner Academy. Successful completion of a vision examination, capturing photographs, and providing a thumbprint are required. When submitting an application for a Commercial Driver License Permit (CLP), it is necessary to present documentation that validates your driving license, legal status in the United States, and residency in Texas. TxDOT provides a range of acceptable documents to fulfill these requirements, which include:

● Birth certificate
● Social Security card
● Valid U.S. Passport
● A Texas driver’s license
● An out-of-state driver’s license
● Military ID card 

When initiating the application process for your Commercial Driver License Permit (CLP), it is essential to bring along your medical certifications, evidence of insurance, and vehicle registrations for all the vehicles under your ownership.

A mandatory waiting period of at least 14 days is required after obtaining your Commercial Driver License Permit (CLP) before you can proceed with the road test. This waiting period allows you ample time to practice driving skills and make necessary preparations for obtaining your CDL. Gasburner Academy, staffed with knowledgeable instructors, will assist you in comprehending the road test requirements and offer feedback on your driving performance during this duration.

In the state of Texas, all CDL examinations comprise three fundamental components:

● Vehicle Inspection (pre-trip) Test: This segment evaluates the understanding of prospective CDL applicants regarding vehicle safety procedures and checks before commencing operation.

● Basic Vehicle Control Test: This section assesses the aptitude of potential CDL holders in controlling and maneuvering large commercial vehicles, encompassing forward and backward movements, turns, and other essential maneuvers.

● Road Test: This part examines the capabilities of potential CDL holders in navigating diverse traffic situations, assessing their ability to drive safely and proficiently in common and uncommon driving scenarios.

Aside from obtaining the appropriate CDL license, you might also need to obtain specific endorsements on your license. These endorsements enable you to transport liquids, marked hazardous materials, and passengers. They consist of the following:

● H - Authorizes the transportation of materials labeled as hazardous. 

● N - Allows the operation of a tanker trailer for transporting liquids. 

● P - Permits driving a vehicle transporting passengers. 

● S - Enables driving school buses. 

● T - Allows the transportation of two or three trailers exceeding a specified weight. 

● X - Authorizes the transportation of hazardous materials in a tanker trailer.

When obtaining your CDL, it is crucial to be aware of the type of driving you will be engaged in and the corresponding location where you will operate your vehicle. This information will be necessary for various forms and instances during the testing procedure. If your driving activities involve interstate travel and traversing across multiple states or throughout the country, you will need to obtain an INTERSTATE Commercial Driver's License. However, if your driving is limited to within the state of Texas and you have no plans for interstate travel, an INTRASTATE CDL will be sufficient for your needs. Students under the age of 21 are required to obtain an INSTRASTATE Commercial Driver's License. 

During the initial days of their training, students will have the chance to acquire their medical card. The majority of physicians possess the capability to assess and certify your medical fitness and eligibility for a Texas CDL. However, certain medical conditions may disqualify you from obtaining a CDL. These conditions include:

● Diabetes necessitating the use of insulin for control. 

● Severe heart problems. 

● Chronic respiratory illnesses. 

● Uncontrolled high blood pressure despite medication. 

● Epilepsy. 

● A history of substance abuse, including alcohol.

The validity period of your commercial learner's permit extends to 180 days. Within this duration, you will have the opportunity to drive a commercial vehicle under supervision, allowing you to practice and acquire the necessary skills for operating such vehicles. However, if you fail to pass your Commercial Skills test within this timeframe, you will be required to restart the process from the beginning.
